Outschool is an online learning platform for students ages 3-18. Outschool was founded in 2015 and has enjoyed astronomical growth. The key may lie in Outschool’s offerings. While it does provide your typical academic courses in core subjects, the company is well known for its niche and unique classes. That is where my Hispanic and Latinx classes come in. Most school districts in the United States lack a focus on Hispanic / Latinx history or social studies. States like Texas have taken this to an extreme and are banning certain classes, and some families have even signed up for my classes to get that desperately needed enrichment.
How I Got Started on Outschool
I started teaching on Outschool in March 2021. The finding of this website was pure luck, to be honest. I had been using a paid job search engine and it showed up under a list of “gig” websites. I had left the teaching profession three years ago, and I was ready to go back to teaching without having to leave my home. With two toddlers, this was the best decision for my family.
Upon looking through the niche I wanted to focus on, I quickly realized the lack of diversity for Hispanic / Latinx content. Even before teaching this content, I’ve always had a passion for learning about my culture and Latin American history. Women’s history is also a favorite topic of mine but women’s history rarely focuses on Hispanic or Latinas. Hence why I started my Legendary Latinas online classes.
4 of My Favorite Classes
This class is the first in a series that showcases and celebrates the achievements and history of some of the most prominent women in Latina / Latinx history, including artist Frida Kahlo, singer Selena, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, and more!
In this class, students will learn about the Sleepy Lagoon Murder Trial and the Zoot Suit Riots that occurred during World War II in Los Angeles, CA.
Students will learn about the Chicano Movement of the late 1960s, the Brown Berets, and Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzalez. This is a perfect introduction class for students with no prior knowledge of the Chicano Movement.
A shorter class for the young ones of all Spanish levels. I teach the Spanish lyrics to classic nursery rhymes such as: “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” “Baby Shark,” “Humpty Dumpty,” and more!
I Hope to See Your Student Soon!
These 4 examples of my classes are just a brief touch on the multitude of classes I have to offer and hope to bring in the future. As you can see, I cover a fairly wide range of topics and release new classes frequently. To see my full list of classes, please visit my Outschool page. I look forward to meeting your child!
